AWE Emerging Composer Mentorship
With New Zealand music woven into the very seams of the AWE Festival, each year a young NZ composer is selected to receive personalised mentoring to write a new work for premiere within the festival.
Selected through a nationwide application process each selected AWE Emerging Composer receives mentoring over the five-month period prior to the October festival, supported to write a string chamber work of approximately 5 minutes in length to be premiered within the festival and performed within multiple school performances in the festival region.
The Emerging Composer takes up residence at the AWE Festival, attending performances, working with the musicians in rehearsal of their composition (supported by the AWE Composer in Residence) and introducing their work within the performances.
From previous AWE Emerging Composers:
"Experiencing the AWE festival and mentorship in 2025 was a formative and special time of my life that I will always look back on as a source of inspiration, creativity, opportunity and growth. I received invaluable feedback that helped me challenge and shape my music from a critical perspective whilst holding onto the essence of my own personal style and the message I was conveying. One of the biggest strengths to this opportunity is the rehearsal time with incredible musicians from across the world, who provide insight and advice not only on the music you write, but for life within the music industry and how to navigate being creative and interpreting the composer's vision. "
Lauren Doherty, AWE 2025 Emerging Composer.
“AWE has certainly been the highlight of my music career to date. The mentoring I received from such an esteemed composer has helped me grow as a musician. Seeing emerging and professional artists come together to create music has made AWE such an inspiring and unique festival, and I feel so privileged to have had this incredible experience. I will cherish the memories made. I am excited to see AWE continue to grow, and to all young composers, I encourage you to apply for this opportunity.

“Attending AWE 2023 has been - and will always remain - one of the most inspiring and exhilarating experiences of my music career. I feel so privileged to have spent time learning from, rehearsing with, and making memories alongside the Festival Artists, Emerging Artists, Composer-In-Residence and Mentoring Composer in one of the most beautiful parts of Aotearoa (and, indeed, the world). I sincerely hope AWE continues to flourish each year, and I wholeheartedly encourage any young artist or composer to apply for this incredible experience.”
